Asbestos in the home
Asbestos was used up to the late 1980’s to improve the strength, durability and fire resistance of some building materials, so may be present in some Sheffield Homes properties.
But in all cases there shouldn’t be any reason for concern. Asbestos is only harmful when damaged or worked on, e.g. cut, sawn, drilled or sanded.
If we find asbestos in a poor condition or where it is likely to be damaged or disturbed, we will repair, seal, enclose or remove it. If it is in good condition then it is usually best left in place and inspected regularly.
Safety first
If you damage a material containing asbestos contact Sheffield Homes via our call centres, North call centre 0114 293 0000 or South call centre 0114 205 3333.
After normal working hours (8.00 am – 5.30pm), at a weekend or during a bank holiday please call 0114 273 0101.
Guide to asbestos
To help answer your questions about Asbestos we’ve produced a new guide called ‘Asbestos in the home’. You can download a copy of the leaflet at the bottom of this page.
Asbestos surveys
As part of the Decent Homes programme, we have been surveying homes to find out if they contain any materials which contain asbestos. We’ve now surveyed around 32,000 homes and will be carrying out the remaining surveys over the next year. The surveys tell you the location of any asbestos and the condition it is in.
We will be sending out copies of surveys to customers from December 2009 onwards. We hope to have all surveys completed and distributed to customers over the next eighteen months.
