Fire Safety
Sheffield Homes is working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to carry out fire risk assessments to all our blocks to identify any potential fire risks and take appropriate action.
Watch out for your Fire Safety in Flats leaflet, which is currently being sent out to tenants and leaseholders of residential blocks to raise awareness and offer advice on reducing the risk of fire, including what to do in the event of a blaze. You can download a copy below.
We have instructed an independent assessor to carry out the checks, accompanied by members of our staff. All 25 tower blocks have had an assessment carried out and work on the blocks should be completed in April. Fire risk assessments are taking place on the 33 sheltered schemes to identify the work required. This work should be finished by July 2010.
The work falls under the new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 which requires us to carry out a fire risk assessment on the flats, maisonettes and sheltered accommodation we manage for Sheffield City Council.
Staff will be visiting Tenants and Residents Associations who have concessionary lets to make sure your procedures, checks and equipment meet current standards.
Our actions are designed to reduce the risk of fire, show easy, safe means of escape, provide effective means of fighting a fire, detect fires and issue a warning and see what the best course of action is if fire breaks out.
Sheffield Homes is also installing signs beside the lifts on each floor which give advice in the case of a fire.
Your local fire and rescue service offers free fire risk checks and may be able to fit free smoke alarms in your home. See the website www.firekills.gov.uk for more information or, to arrange a free safety check, call 0114 253 2314 or visit www.syfire.gov.uk .
If you have a battery smoke alarm or have a problem with a battery alarm please contact South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on 0114 272 7202. Any problem with a hard-wired smoke alarm should be reported as a repair to the Kier repairs call centre on 0114 273 5555. |
