How do I repay arrears?
If your rent is not paid, the money you owe is called 'rent arrears'. Rent arrears are 'priority debts', which mean the consequences of not dealing with them are serious – you risk eviction from your home.
If you do not pay your rent when it is due, you could end up in Court and lose your home. We can also refuse your request to move to another council house.
If you can't pay your rent, have missed payments or are worried your payments are not being made, please sort things out as soon as you can. Even if you have other debts, make sure you prioritise rent arrears.
If you get into arrears or feel you are going to have difficulty with your rent, you must contact us to discuss the situation straight away.
We can help you to:
- Clear the debt
- Make a reasonable arrangement to settle the debt

If you don’t do this, we have the right to take you to Court and seek eviction.
If you fail to pay rent or keep to an arrangement you have made with us to clear the amount owed, the following actions will be taken:
- You will receive a Notice of Seeking Possession
- If you do not then repay the debt, we will take Court action through the County Court to take possession of your property
